Even months after the earthquake and tsunami the situation in Tohoku is still critical. Thousands of people are homeless, jobless and without a convenient means of transportation. Also of concern is radiation leaked from the crippled nuclear power plant in Fukushima, posing a long-term threat.
Such circumstances make it hard for the victims to return to normal life. With no privacy in the evacuation shelters and with job prospects bleak, keeping a positive attitude is a struggle. For these people, knowing that the media is aware and informed of their situation is extremely important to maintain hope. However, despite the massive devastation wrought by the disaster, the victims put on their best faces, acting with the utmost decency and without any signs of self-pity.
Concrete plans of Tohoku 2011 project:
Tohoku 2011 is a project which features images of the aftermath in Tohoku following the Great East Japan Earthquake and aims to make people aware that the monstrous issues caused by the disaster are far from resolved.
The photo exhibition will be held in the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan, August 6th – September 3rd.
This project also aims to raise money to support Sakaki and Manaka Yoshida, two teenagers orphaned by the tsunami. The photographer Martin Hladik met them while photographing in Rikuzentakata, Hirotacho. The gathered funds will go toward living and educational expenses the two children.
